Angela Eagle: From Wallasey MP to Potential Labour Leader
Early Political Career
Angela Eagle began her political career in 1992 when she was elected as the Labour MP for the once marginal Wallasey constituency. She held this seat for 23 years, during which time she served in various roles within the Labour Party.
Leadership Aspirations
In 2015, Eagle announced her intention to stand for the Labour leadership following the resignation of Ed Miliband. She was one of several candidates vying for the position, including Jeremy Corbyn, Andy Burnham, and Yvette Cooper. Eagle's platform focused on economic equality, social justice, and a strong European Union.
Leadership Battle and Aftermath
The Labour leadership contest was a closely fought one, with Corbyn eventually emerging as the victor. Eagle placed third in the voting, behind Corbyn and Burnham. Despite her defeat, Eagle remained active in Labour politics and served as Shadow First Secretary of State and Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills under Corbyn's leadership.
